First engagement

A useful first step, without needing all the answers.

You may have a technical decision to make, a problem that is proving difficult to resolve, or an opportunity that you want to understand before committing time and money to it.

You may also be unsure exactly what help you need. That is a reasonable place to start.

An initial conversation with Fern ICT is an opportunity to explain the situation, explore the questions that matter and establish whether independent technical input would be useful. You do not need a complete brief or a predetermined solution.

Start with the situation

The first step is to understand what you are trying to achieve and what is making the decision difficult.

We might discuss your current systems, the options you have considered, the constraints you are working within or the risks you want to understand. The emphasis is on establishing context and identifying the questions that need answering, rather than jumping straight to a technical solution.

It is helpful to bring whatever information you already have, but there is no need to prepare a formal presentation or document simply to start a conversation.

Establish what would be useful

Sometimes the initial discussion will clarify the problem and suggest a straightforward next step. In other cases, further investigation may be needed before a sound recommendation can be made.

Where more work would be useful, we agree what it should achieve and how best to approach it. Depending on the situation, this might involve an architectural assessment, an evaluation of a proposed technology, an exploration of an AI opportunity, or a review of technical risks and alternatives.

The scope should be proportionate to the decision. It should be clear what is included, what the expected outcome will be and what assumptions or limitations need to be understood.

Agree the work before proceeding

If there is a good reason to proceed, we establish the scope, expected deliverables, timescales and commercial basis before work begins.

This provides a shared understanding of what is being undertaken and what you can expect from it. If the situation is still too uncertain to define a larger piece of work sensibly, a smaller, clearly scoped piece of investigation may be more appropriate.

There is no assumption that an initial conversation must lead to a project, or that one piece of work automatically leads to another.

Useful outcomes, not unnecessary activity

The purpose of an engagement is to help you make a better-informed decision.

That might mean identifying a suitable approach, comparing alternatives, exposing a risk, testing an assumption or concluding that a proposed investment is not justified. The outcome should be useful in its own right, whether or not further work follows.

This reflects our wider approach: independent judgement, clarity before action and engineering that is proportionate to the problem. You can read more about the principles that guide our work in Our Ethos.

Start a conversation

You do not need to know the answer before getting in touch. A brief explanation of the situation and the decision you are facing is enough to begin exploring whether we can help.
