About Fern ICT Limited
Better technology decisions begin with clearer thinking. (Adrian Fern)
Fern ICT is an independent technology consultancy founded on a simple belief: good engineering starts with understanding the problem before choosing the technology.
Over the past three decades I’ve worked across software engineering, cloud infrastructure, scientific computing, cyber security and data-intensive systems. I’ve learned that the most valuable contribution is rarely writing the first line of code. It’s asking better questions, recognising unnecessary complexity, and helping organisations make decisions they’ll still be happy with years later.
That’s the role Fern ICT exists to fulfil.
Our approach is guided by a few straightforward principles: independent technical judgement, clarity, proportionate engineering and responsible practice. We’ve set these out in more detail in Our Ethos.
What to expect from a first engagement
You don’t need a complete brief or a predetermined solution to get started. An initial conversation helps establish the problem, identify what needs to be understood and determine whether further technical input would be useful. Read more about what to expect from a first engagement.
Independent by design
Independence matters.
Because Fern ICT isn’t tied to any software vendor, cloud platform or product ecosystem, recommendations are driven by technical suitability rather than commercial incentives. Sometimes the answer is to adopt new technology. Sometimes it’s to simplify what already exists. Both outcomes are equally valuable.
The objective is always the same: create systems that are resilient, understandable and maintainable.
How I work
I enjoy working with organisations at the point where ideas become architecture.
That might mean assessing whether artificial intelligence genuinely adds value, reviewing a cloud migration before significant investment is made, improving the resilience of an existing platform, or helping technical teams navigate a difficult architectural decision.
The approach is collaborative rather than prescriptive. I believe the best solutions emerge through conversation, evidence and careful reasoning, not by arriving with a predetermined answer.
Experience and perspective
I’ve spent more than three decades working on practical technical problems across both the public and private sectors, from software engineering and infrastructure to scientific and data-intensive systems, cyber security and emerging technologies.
That experience has taught me that technology rarely exists in isolation. The difficult problems tend to sit between disciplines: where software meets infrastructure, where architecture meets organisational constraints, or where an apparently straightforward technical decision has consequences much further downstream.
Fern ICT brings that breadth of experience to each engagement, with the aim of making complex technical decisions clearer and more manageable.
A trusted network
Fern ICT is deliberately small.
Over many years in the industry I have built relationships with a group of trusted associates whose expertise complements my own. Where a project calls for specialist knowledge or additional capacity, I can bring together the right people to undertake bespoke work packages while retaining a coherent technical approach.
It is a loosely coupled network rather than a conventional consultancy team. That gives us the flexibility to assemble the capability a particular problem requires without creating unnecessary organisational overhead.
Between us, there isn’t much we haven’t encountered before, or much we aren’t prepared to tackle.
The aim is straightforward: high-quality technical work that delivers high-value outcomes.
A practical approach to AI
AI is increasingly part of the technical landscape, but it is also a useful tool within the way I work.
I use AI for research, exploration, analysis, software development and content creation where it provides genuine leverage. It can make it considerably faster to explore an unfamiliar problem, test an idea, investigate alternatives or turn a technical decision into something tangible.
But speed is not the same thing as judgement.
AI-generated suggestions still need to be understood, challenged and evaluated. Responsibility for technical decisions, the resulting work and its consequences remains human.
That distinction is central to how Fern ICT approaches both AI itself and the use of AI in its own work.
A lifelong engineer
I remain curious about technology because there is always something new to understand.
Alongside consulting, I write about software architecture, artificial intelligence, resilient systems and the philosophy of engineering. Many of the ideas explored in those articles grow directly from real projects and the conversations that surround them.
I publish longer-form writing and observations on technology through my Substack, and share professional perspectives and industry experience on LinkedIn.
I also serve as CTO of Prizsm Technologies, where I work on secure, resilient and distributed information infrastructure. The two roles are complementary: Fern ICT provides an independent consultancy perspective, while my work at Prizsm keeps me closely involved in the practical development of technology and the problems that emerge at the leading edge of its application.
Technology evolves quickly. Sound engineering principles tend to endure.
Let’s talk
If you’re facing a complex technical decision (or simply want an independent perspective before committing to one) I’d be delighted to have a conversation.
